A

ANSI/ISEA 107

North American hi-visibility safety apparel standard.

The US standard for high-visibility safety apparel, equivalent in role to EN ISO 20471 but with different garment classes. Defines Type O (off-road, e.g., warehouse), Type R (roadway, vehicle traffic exposure), Type P (public safety, emergency responders). Within each type, Class 1, 2 or 3 indicates required fabric area. Required by US OSHA for any worker exposed to vehicle traffic. We routinely produce to both ANSI 107 and EN ISO 20471 standards on the same line.

Antimicrobial Treatment

Built-in fabric finish that inhibits bacterial growth.

A topical or built-in textile treatment that inhibits bacterial growth, reducing odor and pathogen transmission. Common treatments: silver ion (Ag+), zinc pyrithione, quaternary ammonium compounds. Standard certification: AATCC 100 (US) or ISO 22196 (international). Required for healthcare uniforms (scrubs, lab coats) and increasingly specified for hospitality (chef wear, server uniforms) and food processing. Treatment performance is rated by wash-cycle retention (50+ cycles is standard).

AQL 2.5

Industry-standard acceptable quality level for pre-shipment inspection.

Acceptable Quality Limit per ANSI/ASQ Z1.4. AQL 2.5 is the standard inspection level for general workwear: an inspector pulls a statistical sample (typically 80-200 pcs from a 5,000-pc lot) and the lot is accepted if defects in the sample stay below 2.5% major / 4.0% minor. Vanta Workwear's standard QC is AQL 2.5 with optional buyer-paid upgrade to AQL 1.5 (tighter, used for hi-vis safety-critical garments) or AQL 4.0 (looser, used for promotional t-shirts).

Arc Rating / HRC

Arc-flash energy resistance category for electrical workwear.

HRC (Hazard Risk Category) is a NFPA 70E classification of arc-flash protective clothing by arc thermal protective value (ATPV). HRC 1 = 4 cal/cm², HRC 2 = 8.7 cal/cm² (standard for most electrical work), HRC 3 = 25 cal/cm² (substation, switchgear), HRC 4 = 40 cal/cm² (high-energy work). The ATPV is measured per ASTM F1959. Always specify both the HRC category AND the specific ATPV value when sourcing electrical workwear.

B

Bartack Stitch

Dense reinforcement stitch at workwear garment stress points.

A dense zigzag stitch (typically 42 stitches per bartack) applied at points of repeated stress: pocket corners, belt loops, fly endings, sleeve placket tops, label corners. Bartacks prevent stitching from unravelling under repeated tension. The presence and quality of bartacks is one of the fastest tells of workwear construction quality. Cheap workwear skips bartacks or uses sparse single-line reinforcement; quality workwear has 8-14 bartacks per garment.

BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative)

Pan-European social compliance audit for manufacturer working conditions.

A code of conduct and audit framework run by Amfori covering wages, working hours, freedom of association, health and safety, and forced labor. BSCI audits result in a rating A through E plus a corrective action plan. Required by most major European workwear brands and retailers for their China sourcing. Our facility holds a current BSCI audit rating with documentation available for buyers on signed RFP.

C

Care Label

Durable garment label stating fiber, care and other market-required information.

A care label communicates the approved washing, drying, ironing and professional-care method for a garment. Depending on the sales market, the same sewn label set may also carry fiber composition, country of origin, size, importer or responsible-party information, and product identifiers. Buyers should approve wording, symbols, language and placement before bulk production and verify that the instructions match the tested fabric, trims and decoration.

Cordura

Premium high-tenacity nylon fabric for abrasion-resistant workwear.

A branded high-tenacity nylon 6,6 fiber from Invista (formerly DuPont) engineered for abrasion resistance, tear strength and durability. Commonly woven into workwear reinforcement panels (knee patches, elbow patches, tool pocket linings) at 500-1000 denier. Cordura 1000D has abrasion resistance 4-5x higher than standard cotton canvas at the same weight. Premium hard-wear cargo pants and bags use full-panel Cordura construction.

Custom Workwear Compliance

The documented process of matching a garment to applicable market and hazard requirements.

Custom workwear compliance begins with intended use and destination market. The buyer and supplier identify applicable product standards, labeling rules, restricted-substance requirements and supporting evidence before design approval. A social audit or a fabric certificate does not by itself prove that a finished protective garment complies; the final construction, components, marking and test scope must all match the claim being made.

DDP (Delivered Duty Paid)

Incoterm where seller delivers door-to-door including duties.

The most comprehensive Incoterm. The seller handles every cost and risk from factory through customs at destination to delivery at the buyer's named address (usually a warehouse). Includes ocean freight, customs clearance, import duty, VAT/GST, and last-mile delivery. We offer DDP terms to North America (US/Canada), Europe (EU/UK) and Australia for buyers who prefer landed cost over per-stage logistics management.

E

Embroidery Stitch Density

Number of stitches per unit area in machine embroidery.

Measured in stitches per square millimeter or expressed as stitch count per logo. A typical chest-position corporate logo runs 4,000-12,000 stitches at 100% fill density. Higher stitch density means stronger, more vibrant logo but higher unit cost. For FR workwear, embroidery thread must be FR-rated (Nomex or Kevlar thread) at the same density specification.

EN 1149

European standards series for electrostatic properties of protective clothing.

EN 1149 is a series covering electrostatic behavior in protective clothing. EN 1149-5 specifies material and design performance requirements for garments intended to dissipate electrostatic charge as part of a grounded system. It does not make a garment suitable for every electrical or explosive-atmosphere hazard, so buyers must define the complete risk assessment and any additional standards that apply.

EN 343

European standard for protective clothing against rain.

EN 343 evaluates protective clothing intended for wet-weather exposure. Classification addresses resistance to water penetration and water-vapor resistance, with optional testing relevant to finished garments. A waterproof fabric result alone is not enough to support a finished-garment claim because seams, closures, design and the tested garment configuration also affect performance.

EN ISO 11612

European standard for protective clothing against heat and flame.

The European equivalent of NFPA 2112, covering protective clothing for workers exposed to heat and flame in industrial environments. Specifies six performance codes (A through F) for convective heat, radiant heat, molten metal splash, etc. Most welding and oil & gas FR programs require EN 11612 + EN 1149-5 (anti-static) combined. We produce to both EN 11612 and NFPA 2112 standards on the same FR line, allowing the same fabric to ship to EU and US buyers with the appropriate test reports.

EN ISO 20471

European hi-visibility clothing standard for occupational use.

The European standard for high-visibility warning clothing. Defines three performance classes: Class 1 (lowest, e.g., delivery on private property), Class 2 (mid, e.g., warehouse and forklift environments), and Class 3 (highest, e.g., road crews and rail). Class is determined by the minimum area of fluorescent background fabric (0.14-0.80 m²) and retroreflective tape (0.10-0.20 m²). Every hi-vis workwear PO we ship includes the type-3 test report tied to fabric lot.

F

Fabric Specification

The controlled description of a textile used to source, test and reproduce a garment.

A useful fabric specification goes beyond fiber percentage. It normally defines construction or knit type, weight and tolerance, yarn or filament details where relevant, color standard, finishes, dimensional stability, colorfastness, strength and the care regime. The approved specification should stay tied to the sample and bulk-lot test records so repeat orders are evaluated against the same requirements.

Flame-Resistant Fabric

Textile engineered or treated to resist ignition and limit flame spread for a defined use.

Flame-resistant fabric may use inherently resistant fibers or a durable chemical treatment. Suitability depends on the hazard, required performance standard, fabric construction, garment design and care process. Buyers should review test reports for the exact material and, where the standard requires it, evidence for the complete garment rather than relying on a generic fiber or trade-name claim.

FOB (Free On Board)

Incoterm where seller delivers goods to ship at port of origin.

An international shipping Incoterm specifying that the seller's responsibility ends when goods are loaded onto the vessel at the named port of origin. After loading, the buyer assumes risk and cost (ocean freight, insurance, destination handling, customs). Most of our workwear customers ship FOB Shanghai or FOB Ningbo. Buyer typically arranges their own freight forwarder; we deliver to the named container freight station.

G

Garment Grading

Rules used to increase or decrease a base pattern across the approved size range.

Grading converts an approved base-size pattern into the remaining sizes. Each point of measure needs a documented increment or grade rule; simply scaling every dimension by the same percentage usually produces poor fit. A size-set sample is used to confirm that the graded proportions, pocket positions, protective coverage and decoration placement remain appropriate across the range.

Garment Sizing

The system connecting wearer body data, size labels and finished garment measurements.

A sizing system defines the target wearer population, base size, size intervals and label names. Size labels such as M or XL are not universal, so sourcing documents should include body guidance and finished-garment measurements. Fit approval should cover representative wearers and a size set, especially when one program serves multiple regions or body profiles.

GRS (Global Recycled Standard)

Third-party verification of recycled fiber content in textiles.

A voluntary international standard set by Textile Exchange that verifies recycled material content, chain of custody, social and environmental practices, and chemical restrictions throughout the supply chain. A GRS-certified RPET workwear program lets the brand claim recycled content with audit-trail backing. Minimum 20% recycled content to be certified; most RPET workwear runs 65-100% recycled. Required by most large EU sustainability-focused logistics and corporate buyers.

GSM (Grams per Square Meter)

Weight of fabric per unit area; the most-discussed workwear fabric spec.

Grams per square meter is the unit-area weight of a textile. For workwear, GSM ranges from about 150 (lightweight hi-vis polyester knit) to 320+ (heavy industrial coverall twill). Higher GSM generally means more durability, longer life under industrial laundry, slower drying time, and higher unit cost. Always specify GSM with a tolerance (typically +/- 5%) and measurement standard (ISO 3801 or ASTM D3776).

Gusset

Inserted fabric panel adding range of motion at workwear stress areas.

A triangular or diamond-shaped fabric panel inserted at high-motion points (underarm, crotch, knees) to add range of motion without splitting seams. Common in industrial coveralls (underarm gusset for arm raise), cargo pants (crotch gusset for squatting), and chef trousers (saddle gusset). A coverall without a gusset will tear at the underarm within 100 wash cycles under repeated overhead reaching.

H

Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV)

Pre-cut adhesive vinyl applied to workwear via heat press.

Decoration process where a vinyl logo is laser-cut from a sheet, weeded (excess removed), then heat-pressed onto the garment. Excellent for individual name personalization (faster than embroidery for one-off names) and for hi-vis reflective transfer logos. Reflective HTV provides retroreflective branding without compromising garment hi-vis class. Survives 30-50 wash cycles before edges begin to lift; lower lifecycle than embroidery.

ISO 15797

Test procedures for industrial washing and finishing of workwear.

ISO 15797 provides standardized washing and finishing procedures used to evaluate workwear intended for industrial laundering. It helps buyers assess dimensional change, appearance, color performance and component durability under controlled processes. The selected test procedure should reflect the intended laundry system, and results should be reviewed for the finished garment and decoration as well as the base fabric.

ISO 22000

Food-safety management-system standard for organizations in the food chain.

ISO 22000 specifies requirements for a food-safety management system. It may be relevant when assessing operations that supply food-processing environments, but it is not a garment performance certification. Uniform specifications still need separate controls for hygiene design, contamination risks, laundering, materials and any market-specific protective-clothing requirements.

ISO 9001

International quality management system certification.

An international standard for quality management systems issued by the International Organization for Standardization. Certifies that a manufacturer has documented processes for quality control, continual improvement, customer-focused operations, document control and corrective action. Audited annually by accredited certification bodies (TÜV, Bureau Veritas, SGS). Our facility holds current ISO 9001:2015 certification.

K

Knee-Pad Pocket

Integrated trouser pocket that positions a removable knee protector.

A knee-pad pocket holds a compatible insert at the wearer's knee while kneeling and moving. Pocket height, opening direction, closure, abrasion reinforcement and insert dimensions must be coordinated across the size range. When protective performance is claimed, the trouser-and-pad combination should be evaluated against the applicable standard rather than treating the pocket alone as protection.

M

Measurement Tolerance

The permitted variation above or below a target garment measurement.

Tolerance recognizes normal manufacturing variation; it is not a replacement for an accurate pattern or stable process. Each point of measure should have an agreed plus-or-minus allowance based on garment type, fabric behavior and functional importance. Inspection should compare measurements with both the target and its tolerance, using the approved measurement method.

Meta-Aramid (Nomex equivalent)

Inherently flame-resistant synthetic fiber for FR workwear.

A high-performance aramid synthetic fiber that is inherently flame-resistant — the FR property is built into the polymer chain, not applied as a topical treatment. Used in NFPA 2112 and EN 11612 garments. DuPont's branded version is Nomex; equivalent fibers include Teijinconex and Kermel. Typical FR workwear fabric is a meta-aramid blend (93% meta-aramid + 5% para-aramid + 2% antistatic carbon fiber). Survives industrial laundry without losing FR performance, unlike FR-treated cotton.

Moisture-Wicking Fabric

Engineered polyester knit that pulls sweat away from skin.

Polyester fabric engineered with capillary channels in the fiber cross-section that pull moisture away from the skin surface and spread it across the outer fabric for fast evaporation. Common in performance polo shirts and athletic workwear. Specified by tested wicking rate (mm of fabric area wetted in 30 sec) and drying time. Should be the default fabric for hot-environment workwear (warehouse, automotive workshop, hospitality kitchens).

MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity)

Lowest order volume a factory will accept for a custom uniform program.

The minimum number of garments per style, per color, per size combination that the factory will produce. Vanta Workwear's standard workwear MOQ is 100 pcs per style per color. Some specialty categories (FR meta-aramid, OR-grade surgical scrubs) have a higher fabric-driven MOQ of 200-300 pcs. Multiple sizes within the same style/color count toward a single MOQ, so a 100-pc order can span sizes XS through 4XL.

NFPA 2112

US standard for flash-fire-protective workwear in oil, gas and petrochemical.

The US National Fire Protection Association standard for flame-resistant garments protecting industrial personnel against flash-fire exposure. Mandatory in many upstream oil and gas, midstream pipeline and downstream refinery operations. NFPA 2112 garments must self-extinguish, not melt, and limit body burn injury to <50% per ASTM F1930 manikin testing. Every NFPA 2112 garment we ship includes the fabric-lot-specific third-party test report from accredited labs (UL, SGS, Intertek).

O

OEKO-TEX Standard 100

Independent chemical-safety certification for textiles.

A third-party certification testing finished textile products for over 350 harmful substances including formaldehyde, heavy metals, pesticide residues and banned azo dyes. Issued in four product classes (I-IV) by skin-contact intensity. Class I (strictest, suitable for babies). Class II is required for direct-skin-contact workwear (shirts, scrubs, polo shirts) and is our default. Class III for outerwear, Class IV for furnishings. Issued by the OEKO-TEX Association via certificate from accredited testing institutes.

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)

Manufacturing a buyer-controlled garment specification under the buyer's brand.

In custom apparel, OEM usually means the supplier manufactures to a specification, sample, tech pack or performance brief controlled by the buyer. The commercial scope should state who owns patterns and artwork, who approves substitutions, which tests are required, how changes are documented, and what remains fixed for repeat orders. OEM describes the supply relationship; it is not a product certification.

Pantone Color Matching

Brand-color reproduction to a Pantone reference using lab dips.

The process of matching a fabric dye color to a specific Pantone reference (typically Pantone Coated or Pantone TPX/TCX for textiles). Performed via lab dips — small fabric swatches dyed against the target, compared visually and spectrophotometrically (Delta-E < 1.5 for solid colors is the working tolerance). Lab dips are issued to the buyer for sign-off before bulk production. Pantone-matched colors are stored on file for repeat orders.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Equipment or clothing intended to reduce exposure to a defined workplace hazard.

PPE is selected from a workplace risk assessment and must be appropriate for the hazard, user, task and market. A garment becomes protective because its design, materials, coverage, compatibility, instructions and supporting conformity evidence meet the relevant requirements, not because it resembles safety clothing. Branded uniforms without a substantiated protective function should not be presented as PPE.

Point of Measure (POM)

A precisely defined location and method for measuring a garment.

A point of measure specifies where a dimension starts and ends, how the garment is laid out, and whether features such as rib, elastic or curves are relaxed or extended. POM diagrams reduce disagreement between buyer, pattern maker and inspector. Every target measurement should be paired with a realistic tolerance and the same method should be used for samples and bulk inspection.

Q

Quality Control

Planned checks used to keep materials, workmanship and packing within an approved specification.

Workwear quality control begins before final inspection. It includes incoming-material verification, shade and trim control, approved samples, first-piece checks, inline inspection, measurement review, functional checks and final random inspection. The inspection plan should define defect categories, sample method, acceptance criteria and escalation rules instead of relying on a final visual check alone.

R

Revision Control

A documented system for keeping every supplier and approver on the same specification version.

Revision control records what changed, who approved it and when the new version became effective. Tech packs, bills of materials, artwork, size charts, test requirements and packaging instructions should use consistent revision identifiers. Superseded files should be withdrawn from production so an old pocket layout, label or color reference cannot re-enter a repeat order.

Ring-Spun Cotton

Cotton yarn produced via ring-spinning frame; the durability minimum.

A spinning method where cotton fibers are pulled, twisted and wound onto a ring frame. Produces stronger and smoother yarn than open-end (rotor) spinning, at about 15-25% higher cost. Should be the minimum yarn standard for any commercial-grade workwear cotton fabric. Ring-spun workwear survives 150-200+ industrial wash cycles; open-end yarn shirts degrade by wash 50.

Ripstop Weave

Reinforcement weave preventing tear propagation in workwear fabric.

A textile weave construction with heavier-denier reinforcement threads woven into a grid pattern (typically 5-8mm squares) throughout the lighter base fabric. The reinforcement grid stops a tear from propagating beyond a single grid cell — even if the fabric snags and tears, the rip is contained to a small area instead of running the length of the garment. Used in construction workwear, FR coveralls, outdoor and military workwear. Identifiable by the visible grid pattern on the fabric surface.

RPET (Recycled Polyester)

Polyester yarn spun from post-consumer plastic bottles.

Polyester fiber produced by recycling post-consumer PET plastic bottles. Each ton of RPET fiber diverts roughly 35,000 plastic bottles from landfill. Performance is identical to virgin polyester for workwear applications (hi-vis, polos, jackets), at a price premium of 8-15%. Required by an increasing share of European and large logistics-program buyers as a sustainability claim. Look for GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certification to verify recycled content claims.

Screen Printing

Stencil-and-ink printing for branded workwear logos and backs.

A printing process where ink is pushed through a fine mesh stencil onto fabric, layered one color at a time. Best for solid-color logos with sharp edges and limited color count (1-6 colors typical). Cost-effective at volume (50+ pcs per logo). Plastisol inks are standard for cotton, water-based inks for soft-feel premium prints. Survives 50-100 industrial wash cycles before significant fade. Common on workwear t-shirts, hoodies and back-panel branding.

Sublimation Printing

Dye-into-polyester process producing photographic-quality all-over print.

A printing process where dye is heat-transferred (sublimated) into polyester fibers, producing photographic-quality color with no surface texture. Works only on polyester fabric (or polyester-blend with > 65% poly content). Used for hi-vis polos with all-over team colors, dye-sublimated team uniforms, full-color graphic workwear. Survives industrial laundry indefinitely because dye is embedded in the fiber rather than printed on the surface.

T

Tech Pack

Production-ready specification document for a custom garment.

A document used to communicate a garment design and specification from buyer to manufacturer. Typically includes a flat sketch (front, back, side), construction details (seams, stitching, hardware), measurement chart (size run), fabric and trim specifications, label and packaging details, and decoration placement. A good tech pack reduces sampling rounds. We can also write a tech pack for buyers who supply only a sketch or sample garment.

Twill Weave

Diagonal-line weave structure; the workwear fabric default.

A textile weave with a diagonal rib pattern, produced by passing the weft thread over two warp threads then under one. Twill is the default workwear fabric weave because it offers strong abrasion resistance, drapes well, hides stains and creases less than plain weave. Common twill workwear fabrics: 65/35 poly-cotton twill (general workwear), 100% cotton twill (chef wear), nylon twill (rain gear), meta-aramid twill (FR coveralls).

W

Waterproof-Breathable Fabric

Layered or coated textile designed to resist liquid water while allowing water vapor to pass.

Waterproof-breathable performance is usually described with water-penetration and water-vapor or evaporative-resistance test results. Fabric performance can be reduced by seams, punctures, closures, contamination and incompatible care. For protective rainwear, buyers should specify the complete garment requirement and seam-sealing construction rather than relying on a membrane name or fabric-only rating.

Workwear

Garments specified for repeated use in a job, trade or operational environment.

Workwear ranges from branded uniforms to hazard-specific protective clothing. A practical specification considers task, climate, movement, soil exposure, laundering, expected service life, wearer sizing and replacement logistics. Protective claims require their own standards and evidence; ordinary occupational clothing should not be assumed to provide protection solely because it is durable or industrial in appearance.
