A construction uniform program has more failure modes than almost any other category: a hi-vis class shortfall is a safety violation, a fabric durability shortfall is a budget overrun, a fit issue is a crew complaint storm, and a logo decoration failure is a brand consistency embarrassment in front of clients. Getting it right means walking through the checklist.
1. Hi-vis class — non-negotiable
- Crew exposed to public road traffic: EN ISO 20471 Class 3 (full polo/jacket + pants combination)
- Crew on private jobsite with vehicle/forklift traffic: EN ISO 20471 Class 2 (vest minimum)
- Crew in controlled environments only: Class 1 acceptable, but Class 2 preferred for cross-site consistency
- US-deployed crew: spec ANSI/ISEA 107 Type R Class 2 or Class 3 in parallel with EN ISO 20471
2. Fabric — durability + crew comfort
- Hi-vis polo top: 150-180 GSM polyester knit, moisture-wicking, EN ISO 20471 fluorescent fabric
- Cargo work pants: 65/35 poly-cotton twill, 240-280 GSM, Cordura knee panels
- Outer jacket: water-resistant polyester softshell or Cordura ripstop with reflective tape
- FR sub-program for welders, hot-cutting crew: meta-aramid blend, EN 11612 / NFPA 2112 compliant
3. Decoration — brand + crew name
- Embroidered company logo: chest left position, 4,000-8,000 stitches
- Embroidered crew name patch: chest right position, 6mm letter height minimum
- Large back-panel screen print: company name + role identifier (Crew Chief, Site Supervisor, Apprentice)
- Velcro-attached role patches: for crews that rotate roles across sites
4. Sizing — broad range for construction
- Size run: XS through 5XL (construction crews skew XL/XXL more than other workwear categories)
- Tall sizing: Add Tall (LT, XLT, 2XLT) for crews >188cm/6'2" — 5-8% of typical construction headcount
- Generous fit through shoulders: construction crews wear a tool belt and harness; fitted polos restrict reach
5. Certification documentation
- EN ISO 20471 type-3 test report: fabric-lot-specific, issued per shipment
- ANSI/ISEA 107 test report: parallel certification if US-deployed
- OEKO-TEX 100 Class II: skin-contact safety baseline
- Reflective tape test report: 3M Scotchlite tape ID + 50-cycle wash test
- FR certification (if applicable): EN 11612 + ATPV / NFPA 2112 test reports
6. Lead time and reorder strategy
- First order: 35-50 days from confirmed PO (sampling + production + AQL inspection)
- Reorders: 25-35 days (sampling skipped against established spec)
- Recommended reorder cycle: 4-6 months for active construction crew (250+ wash cycles/year garment life)
- Replacement buffer: 25-35% above active headcount on each reorder for turnover and loss
