Pantone matching in workwear is how a brand ensures the navy polo shipped today looks the same as the navy polo shipped six months ago. It starts when the buyer picks a Pantone chip, goes through a lab dip for approval, then runs through bulk dyeing with QC checks at every stage. Why Pantone matters in workwear sourcing
Without a Pantone reference, a buyer is asking for navy and hoping the factory sends navy. Fabric dyes drift — different mill runs, different dye lots, different lighting at the QC table. A Pantone number anchors the conversation to a physical standard both sides can check against. For a uniform program with repeat orders, the Pantone reference keeps the second order matching the first.
The lab dip stage
After the buyer selects a Pantone, the fabric mill produces a lab dip — a small dyed swatch — and sends it for approval. The buyer checks it against the Pantone chip under a D65 light box. If the shade is within the agreed tolerance (typically Delta E ≤ 1.5), the lab dip is signed off and becomes the production standard. If not, the mill adjusts and re-submits. Lab dips typically take 5-7 business days per round.
Bulk production and QC
Once the lab dip is approved, the mill runs the full fabric lot. The first few metres off the dyeing machine are cut, finished and checked against the approved lab dip — this is the bulk lot sample. If the bulk lot matches within tolerance, production continues. If it drifts, the mill adjusts the dye formula before the entire lot runs. Pre-shipment QC checks the finished garments against the same approved standard before the container leaves.

- D65 light box — the industry-standard daylight simulator for colour assessment (ISO 3668)
- Spectrophotometer — measures reflected colour as Lab* values; Delta E ≤ 1.5 is the typical pass threshold for workwear
- Grey scale — ISO 105-A02 for assessing colour change after wash testing
Reorders and colour consistency
We archive a retained sample of every approved fabric lot — a physical reference that the reorder is measured against. New lab dips are run against the retained sample, not just the Pantone chip. This closes the gap between what was approved on paper and what actually shipped, and is standard practice in our corporate and hospitality uniform programs.
