Why pocketing deserves its own specification
Many buyers spend weeks approving shell fabric, reflective tape, zippers, trims, and logo placement, then leave pocketing as “standard lining.” That is risky. Pocket bags take repeated abrasion from keys, cutters, phones, scanners, gloves, and small tools. They also sit against the body, absorb perspiration, and move differently from the outer shell during washing. A poor pocketing choice may not fail in the sample room, but it can fail after months of shift work and repeated laundering. The goal is not always to buy the heaviest fabric. The correct choice depends on garment type, pocket function, wearer environment, laundry method, and the items carried. A cargo trouser for maintenance staff needs different pocket behavior from a food-service tunic, a warehouse vest, or a winter jacket. Buyers should define fiber content, construction, weight, color, shrinkage, colorfastness, and reinforcement logic in the tech pack before sampling.

Match the fabric to the pocket job
A uniform can contain several pocket types, and they should not automatically share one pocketing. Hand pockets need comfort, stable shrinkage, and smooth hand entry. Cargo pockets need tear strength, seam hold, and resistance to repeated loading. Chest pockets often need clean appearance and low bulk. Internal jacket pockets may need stable shape for phones or access cards. Tool pockets may require oxford, canvas, or added reinforcement patches rather than ordinary pocketing. If the outer garment uses stretch fabric, decide whether the pocketing also needs stretch. Non-stretch pocket bags inside stretch trousers can restrict movement or create stress at the pocket mouth, while stretch pocketing can bag out if recovery is poor. Use standards as test methods, not slogans
A good pocketing fabric spec should be measurable. Useful references include ISO 12947 for abrasion resistance by the Martindale method, ISO 13934 for tensile properties of fabrics, ISO 13937 for tear properties, ISO 105 series methods for colorfastness, ISO 6330 for domestic washing and drying procedures, and ISO 15797 for industrial washing and finishing test procedures. These standards do not automatically define a pass level for your pocketing; they provide recognized methods for measuring behavior. A buyer still has to set the acceptance target by garment risk. For example, pocketing for a light office-service trouser may not need the same abrasion target as a pocket used for maintenance tools. For rental laundry, hospitality, logistics, and maintenance programs, industrial washing can be much harsher than home washing. If garments will go through tunnel finishing, high extraction, repeated tumble drying, or alkaline wash chemistry, do not approve pocketing only from a showroom swatch. Wash the full garment sample using the intended care process, then inspect pocket twisting, puckering, lint, broken stitches, pocket-mouth distortion, and whether the pocket bag still sits flat.
Control GSM, weave, shrinkage, and hand feel
Fabric weight is usually specified in grams per square meter, but GSM alone does not prove durability. A tightly woven 115 GSM poly-cotton plain weave can perform better in a pocket bag than a loose 145 GSM fabric with poor yarn quality. Weave density, yarn strength, finishing, resin treatment, and shrinkage control all matter. Soft pocketing may feel good in a new sample but abrade quickly at the pocket bottom. Stiff pocketing may last longer but create bulky seams, poor drape, or discomfort when the wearer sits or squats. As a practical starting point, many general industrial trouser pocket bags use medium-weight poly-cotton pocketing around 100-140 GSM, while tool-contact zones often need separate reinforcement in heavier oxford, canvas, or self-fabric. Jackets may combine soft brushed tricot for hand-warmer pockets with stronger woven pocketing for internal storage pockets. Avoid putting heavy oxford everywhere just to signal durability. It can slow sewing, distort curved pocket openings, and make a garment feel overbuilt.
Specify color and contamination risk
Pocketing color should be selected deliberately. White or natural pocketing makes inspection easier and can reduce dark dye transfer risk, but it may look dirty quickly in harsh jobs. Dark pocketing hides soil, yet it must be checked for crocking and washing colorfastness. ISO 105 methods are commonly used to evaluate colorfastness to washing, rubbing, and perspiration, including ISO 105-C06 for domestic and commercial laundering colorfastness and ISO 105-X12 for rubbing. For light-colored outer garments, dark pocketing can shadow through the shell or migrate at seam edges if the dye is unstable. Food processing, electronics, and some assembly environments may also care about lint. Cotton-rich pocketing can shed more lint than polyester-rich constructions. Brushed pocketing feels comfortable but may release fibers or pill. If contamination matters, evaluate pocketing alongside seam finishing, garment design, and laundering. A simple dry swatch rub is not enough because finishing chemicals can temporarily mask lint, pilling, and dye behavior.
Engineer the pocket construction with the fabric
- Confirm pocket depth and opening width using the actual items workers carry, such as phones, scanners, keys, cutters, gloves, or small tools.
- Check whether bartacks land through enough fabric layers to spread stress without cutting yarns or creating a hard tear point.
- Use rounded pocket-bag corners where possible because sharp corners concentrate stress during loading and washing.
- Avoid raw pocketing edges in zones exposed to abrasion; clean overlocking or binding can reduce fraying risk.
- Add reinforcement patches only where repeated contact justifies them, rather than making the entire pocket bag unnecessarily heavy.
- Review the pocket bag after washing and loading trials, not only on the first fitting sample.
Sampling checks before bulk approval
Sampling should prove that the pocketing works inside the finished garment. Request swatches, but do not approve from swatches alone. A pocketing fabric changes once it is cut, sewn, washed, pressed, and loaded. During prototype and pre-production stages, inspect the pocket bag from inside and outside. Put typical carried items into the pocket, then walk, squat, reach, and sit. If a phone corner, tool handle, or access device creates an obvious pressure point, the pocketing or pocket design may need adjustment. A practical pre-production check should include fabric hand feel, weight confirmation, shade comparison, seam appearance, stitch density, pocket bag symmetry, pocket-mouth strength, and shrinkage after wash. For industrial laundry programs, request a wash trial close to the intended process. Control cost without false economy
Pocketing is a small part of garment cost, but a large part of daily user experience. Saving a few cents with a weak pocket bag can create repair claims, wearer complaints, or early replacement. At the same time, over-specifying premium pocketing in every location wastes budget and may reduce comfort. The best cost control is zoning: use standard durable pocketing where appropriate, softer lining where comfort matters, and reinforcement only where load and abrasion justify it. Buyer checklist for procurement tech packs
Before confirming bulk production, put the pocketing fabric into the tech pack with the same discipline used for shell fabric and trims. The minimum specification should include fiber content, construction, approximate GSM, color, shrinkage target, colorfastness expectations, pocket type mapping, and approved swatch reference. For higher-risk uses, add abrasion, tear, tensile, and wash testing based on the intended garment life and laundry route. For flame-resistant or arc-related protective clothing, pocketing and any reinforcement must be compatible with the certified garment system; do not substitute ordinary lining into protective areas without technical review against the applicable protective standard and certification scope. Finally, document the approved material reference for reorders. Pocketing substitutions are easy to miss because the fabric is hidden, but wearers notice when pockets tear, twist, bleed, or feel bulky.
